Transport
U-Bahn U5 and U1/U3 (Warschauer Straße); S-Bahn at Ostkreuz, Warschauer Straße, Ostbahnhof and Frankfurter Allee (Ring S41/S42).

Friedrichshain lies between the Spree, Karl-Marx-Allee and Ostkreuz station. Its centre is the Boxhagener Kiez, with a Saturday market, cafés and bars; to the north Volkspark Friedrichshain is one of the largest parks in central Berlin, and to the south the East Side Gallery and the river mark the border with Kreuzberg.

The housing stock has two sides. Around Boxhagener Platz and Samariterstraße, renovated late-19th-century period buildings (Altbau) dominate; along Karl-Marx-Allee stand the monumental, listed 1950s buildings in the so-called wedding-cake style, with large, bright flats. On the riverside Mediaspree area many new builds have gone up.

Students, young professionals and young families who want to stay in the city live here. Evenings are busy, especially around Simon-Dach-Straße and Revaler Straße; those who want quiet look north of Frankfurter Allee or near the Volkspark.

For investors Friedrichshain combines prices still below Mitte with some of the strongest rental demand in the city. Flats in the listed Karl-Marx-Allee buildings are a market of their own: restrictions on works, but rare features and loyal buyers.
