Buildings
Almost entirely late-19th-century period buildings (Altbau), mostly renovated after 1990; few new builds on vacant plots.
Transport

Prenzlauer Berg grew up in the late 19th century as a working-class district and is now one of the most desirable parts of Berlin. Life revolves around squares such as Kollwitzplatz and Helmholtzplatz, with weekly markets, cafés and small shops; Mauerpark on the western edge and Volkspark Friedrichshain to the south-east provide the green space the centre lacks.

The streets are lined almost entirely with four- and five-storey period buildings (Altbau) with inner courtyards, high ceilings and wooden floors. Most were renovated after 1990; new builds are rare and mainly fill empty plots or former industrial sites, such as around the Kulturbrauerei.

It is the classic choice for families: plenty of schools and nurseries, quiet residential streets, a playground on almost every block. It also suits people who work in Mitte but want a more residential setting a few minutes away. Nightlife is calmer than in Friedrichshain or Kreuzberg.

For investors this is a mature market: prices are already high, supply is short and rental demand is constant. Many flats have been part of condominium buildings for years, with established management; before buying it is worth reading the owners’ meeting minutes and checking the maintenance reserve.
